Here’s some info from the West Allis Now on the Common Council’s recent decision to approve the switch to recycling carts.
West Allis/West Milwaukee Community Garden Committee welcome all to come to these free to the public garden share workshops. These are expected to be approximately 30 to 60 minutes in length dependent upon number and participation of attendees. We encourage everyone to bring your garden experience and stories to share with the group.

Tuesday, June 14th from 5pm – 7pm in the City Hall Council Chambers.
This bike share system will become part of the Bublr Bike Share System that currently serves the City of Milwaukee.
We are looking for your input regarding:
-Proposed station locations
-Your thoughts on the proposed bike share system.

The Green Initiative has started a new program for you to show your friends that you care about West Allis and the environment.
Take the West Allis Green Pledge to receive your Green certificate signed by Mayor Devine.

Re-Creation Station and the West Allis Green Initiative have collaborated to offer a unique Earth Day experience for the entire family. Numerous exhibitors will be there to answer your environmental questions. Talk gardening with Victory Gardens, get a bike tuned up by Dream Bikes, learn about outdoor self-reliance and homemade DIY body care products from Resiliency Training LLC, hear the benefits a rain barrels can offer, and take the Green Pledge from the Green Initiative. Activities also include a Creative Area for the kids.
Come join us at City Hall on Sunday, April 24th from 11am – 3pm for a day filled with lots of FREE family fun.

It should be common practice to replace your smoke detector batteries twice a year, but when should you replace your smoke detector. According to Consumer Reports, a new smoke detector should be installed every 10 years. When the time comes to replace yours, how should you dispose of it?
Do not throw your smoke detector in the trash!
Smoke detectors contain a number of elements and materials that are not suitable for landfills. In the interest of preserving our planet, caution should be taken upon disposing of smoke detectors for the following reasons:
Some Detectors Contain Radioactive Materials
80% of all household smoke detectors in the United States contain a radioactive element, Americium-241, with a half-life of 432 years! The amount used in most newer ionization smoke alarms is small and not harmful to humans, but could harm the environment.
Circuit Boards in Smoke Alarms Are Bad for Landfills
Nearly all smoke detectors models contain circuit boards, which are very bad for landfills. Circuit boards contain lead among other toxins that can leach into the ground and eventually our water supply.
They contain Alkaline and Lithium Batteries
Some detectors contain removable alkaline batteries, just like the ones you would use in your remote control. Furthermore, 10 year sealed battery smoke alarms are as stated, sealed—thus making battery removal impossible. Batteries, alkaline or lithium do not belong in landfills.

To promote Fire Safety Prevention, City residents are encouraged to clean out their homes and bring items to be shredded on-site at a Shreddathon.
This event will be held rain or shine on:
Saturday, October 3, 9:00 a.m. to noon
West Allis City Hall, 7525 West Greenfield Avenue, ENTER FROM South 76 Street
Each City residence will be allowed to bring 3 boxes (11″ x 17″ X 9.5″) or 6 paper grocery bags of documents containing personally identifiable information such as tax returns, bank statements, paycheck stubs, and cancelled checks.
* *ID will be required to show proof of City residency. * *
Recycling of unused batteries (AAA, AA, C, D and 9 Volt), smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors will be provided. In addition, free “Clean Green Buckets” (environmentally friendly cleaning supplies) will be available while supplies last.
